Larger than the famous massive circle at Avebury in England, the Great Circle Earthworks in Newark, Ohio, stands as a testament to ancient human ingenuity in the Americas long before Europeans rediscovered its existence. I say “rediscovered” because it seems that more and more we are finding unexplainable connections between these continents – and the rest of the world, actually – that can’t be explained by the traditional narrative we’ve been fed for centuries. What sort of connections do I mean?
Back in July, as part of our explorations of ancient Ohio, including a day at the incredible Serpent Mound, I took Kate to the Great Circle Earthworks to experience the energies of this incredible World Heritage site. To honor those energies, we performed a counterclockwise walk around the entire site, barefoot in the grass so we could directly connect with the earth. This would later have a positive influence upon our experience there. That walk encompassed the entire 3,770-foot circumference of the Great Circle (nearly three quarters of a mile), almost exactly two months after we’d walked the entire 3,470 circumference of the Avebury circle. The largest difference between the two sites are the megalithic stones surrounding the Avebury circle, but if you were to remove those stones, there are some uncanny similarities.
